Balloon Festival Talking Points

Here are some great Balloon Round-up talking points from Kurt Oakley.
Remember the balloonists pay their own way to come here. If you happen to see them please thank them for coming to our town and putting on this incredible show for our enjoyment!

  • What Winthrop Balloon Roundup, Approx. 20 hot air balloons from around the Northwest The Winthrop Chamber's 15th year of hosting
  • When Friday, Saturday Sunday March 2,3, 4  7:00 AM Some balloons may come early and fly Thurs.
  • Where Winthrop Inn (960 Highway 20) next to the Winthrop Ace Hardware & Red Apple Market
  • Sponsored by Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, Winthrop Inn, River Run Inn, Chewuch Inn & Morning Glory Balloon Tours
  • Balloon Glow Saturday night Sponsored by Methow River Lodge & Cabins -A couple of balloons will inflate right in the middle of downtown Winthrop at 6:00 PM Saturday evening. As dusk comes and the balloons fire up their burners, the illuminated balloons "glow". Another great way to see the balloons up close.
  • Balloon launches: Balloons are scheduled to begin inflating each morning around 7:00 AM behind the Winthrop Inn. Spectators are welcome to roam about the launch field and see the craft up "close and personal". This is a spectator friendly event. Please, no dogs.
  • Photo opportunities: Spectators can not only get great photos on the field but some panoramic shots as well if you follow or "chase" the balloons as they fly.
  • Rides: Space is very limited. For info contact Morning Glory Balloon Tours 509-997-1700
  • Weather: Balloons need calm winds to fly. They launch early because that's when the winds are the most calm. If the winds are too strong or there's precipitation the flights may be scrubbed. Fortunately The Methow has a great track record for flyable days. That's why we're here!
  • Forecast: Looks like one last gasp of snow Tues PM / Wed AM to whiten things up. Then a more favorable trend. Confidence is high.
  • What else is happening: Triathlon, Slopestyle Competition at Loup, MVSTA trails are in perfect shape, Snowmobiling's been great, Restaurants are open. Check it all out at winthropwashington.com 1888-4-Methow
  • Catch phrases: Sky Candy, Come be a Balloonatic, A weekend of lift and drift,
  •  Seeing the inflation (taking a 4' bag of fabric and turning it into a 60' tall balloon), Drifting quietly except for the occasional burner noise, Panoramic views. etc.
  • Balloons are aircraft and the people flying them have pilots licenses as well as the balloons inspected.
  • Balloon Roundup Background: Around 25 years ago a few balloons came over from the west side to fly in the valley for fun. They made a tradition of coming over every year as a weekend getaway. In 1997 The Winthrop Chamber began promoting the get together and it's been a fun spectacle since.

Sponsored through Okanogan County, the seminar teaches Methow area farmers, ranchers, tourist industries and community leaders how to develop agri-tourism to diversify and increase income.

The seminar aims at 3 purposes common to our valley citizen's visions of sustainable economy: 1) sustainable and responsible land use, 2) increased income to existing tourism economy and 3) increased income for existing agricultural economy.

Join us in this important training for our economic development as a community and county.  To reserve your seat at the seminar, contact Georgina Tobiska @ 509.429.9784 or Curtis Beus, Ph.D., @ 509.422.7245.

OCEC Electric Rate Tool

Ray Peterson in collaboration with the Okanogan County Electric Cooperative  has created a fabulous tool that helps local businesses anticipate what their electric bills will look like under the 4 proposed new rate structures. The new tool not only helps you to anticipate future business expenses but also helps you to become involved in the process of deciding which rate structure is best for our community.  You can access this information via Methow Grist http://www.methownet.com/grist/newsbriefs/methow_elec_site.html

New Winthrop Mobile Website

Winthrop Washington has a new mobile website!

As more and more of our visitors are using their mobile phones to access information we have created a mobile website that will display more effectively on mobile devices.  You can see the site here.

Here too are some great graphics that support the direction mobile is going in such as it is expected that by 2014 mobile search will overtake desktop internet usage.

A big thanks to Dana Spahr at Cowgirl Fotografy for the rodeo image. Earth and Sky Studios for the graphic design work and Methownet for the implementation and hosting!

Food and Restaurants maybe interested in this...

Methow Valley businesses may appreciate this resource. With the explosive popularity in local foods this website is a great opportunity for the Methow Valley to showcase our incredible agriculture.

A little about Local Harvest....
LocalHarvest is America's #1 organic and local food website. We maintain a definitive and reliable "living" public nationwide directory of small farms, farmers markets, and other local food sources. Our search engine helps people find products from family farms, local sources of sustainably grown food, and encourages them to establish direct contact with small farms in their local area. Our online store helps small farms develop markets for some of their products beyond their local area.

Historically, around the beginning of March, Local Harvest sees a big spike in our traffic, with upwards of 35,000 people coming to LocalHarvest every day looking for information on local food, markets, and farm events. Our hope, of course, is that the people looking in your area will find current information about your farm or market. Note to CSAs: We are increasingly getting requests from journalists and researchers wondering how many CSA members there are in the U.S., so please pay particular attention to the current accuracy of the "number of CSA members" field.

Creating a listing of your business is free and can be done via their website at http://www.localharvest.org/ You will notice a number of Methow Valley businesses are already listed on this site.

Upcoming Attractions

As always a lot is happening in the Methow Valley, next weekend is Snowshoe Softball hosted by Three Finger Jacks. Then President's Weekend all through the following week is the Methow Valley Winter Festival. The Winter Festival is a great celebration of outdoor recreation and arts and entertainment. Be sure to familiarize yourself with all the events. Many Seattle schools have the entire week following President's Day off.
Following next month is the Balloon Round-up. As organizer Kurt Oakley shared at the Chamber meeting he would love some more involvement by businesses in helping to recognize the visiting balloonists who pay their own way to attend this festival, all for our enjoyment. If your business can assist Kurt at all please give him a call at 997-1600. The Balloon Round-up received some great press in Ballooning magazine. Turns out the Winthrop Balloon event has been going on for 30 years! Read the full story here. This is an inspirational story and another tribute to what Kurt and Melinda at Morning Glory Balloons has created for our community.

Lauralee Northcott Cannot Sit Down!

Lauralee Northcott of our beloved Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band is dreaming up a great event for Winthrop's future and she would love to get your input. As she shared at the Winthrop Chamber Meeting:

"I am also  very excited to host the Winthrop Cowboy Gathering, and I am attaching a copy of my tentative schedule."  https://s3.amazonaws.com/Chamber/poster+of+events%5B1%5D.pdf

Lauralee is looking for input on when might be the best weekend to host this event. Many people at the Chamber meeting shared June or October.  From this Lauralee states,

"It looks to me like the first weekend in October got the most votes, from my conversations.  The shoulder seasons are important to utilize, and everyone seemed agreed that June or October are the best.  I like October because using outdoor venues will enhance the downtown stroll feeling I would like to achieve & October is more likely to be warm.   I would like to focus on October 4-5, 2013."

If you have input for Lauralee or would like to be involved with this event please give her a call at 509-996-2404.

Winter Chamber Music Concert

The Methow Valley Chamber Music Festival has just added a new Winter concert performance, Friday, February 24th at 7:30pm.  Posters are being distributed throughout town.

Groundhog Day SUCCESS!

Our 2nd annual Winthrop Groundhog Day was another big success.  We grew attendance by approximately 500% and got a lot of media exposure. This event is the brain-child of local residents Susy and Fritz Zuch.  A couple of years ago they saw a groundhog in their yard on Groundhog Day and called Seattle weatherman Steve Pool who loved the idea that the Northwest had it's own Groundhog. Thus the event was born.

This year this Winthrop event had morning and evening news TV coverage from:
KOMO News 4 in Seattle
KREM News in Spokane
KHQ News in Spokane

Steve Foreman of Methow Grist produced this incredible video of the event. KTRT aired the event live.

A HUGE THANKS to these businesses for assisting with this event:
Avant Med- Susy and Fritz Zuch
North Cascades Basecamp- Steve Bondi
Mark Wenzel
Backcountry Coffee
KTRT- Dan Kirkmire
Methow Grist
Bryan's Sporting Goods
Merc Playhouse
MVSTA

Next year Groundhog Day falls on a Saturday. The goal is to make this a destination event for visitors.
